Vanessa Jenkins is the owner and CEO of Sew Perfect by Vanessa, LLC. She is also a graduate of LAEDA’s Entrepreneurial Development Training Program. We had a chance to sit down with Vanessa Jenkins to ask about her experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA's training program.

(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I chose the path of Entrepreneurship to leave a legacy for my children. There are many businesses available to consumers. I wanted a business that specializes in items for a variety of customers.

(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

My industry (sewing) is a dying art. We live in a microwave society, where most people want to have 'it' now. However, when I take fabric and create a personalized work of art, the world smiles! While projects are not often completed in a day, my customers are overjoyed with their finished products. I've been able to couple my love of sewing and embroidery to create a business.

(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

At LAEDA you MUST put in the work! The staff and presenters provided a level of expertise second to none. My "Ah-ha" moment came when I realized that I no longer have a hobby. I HAVE A BUSINESS! With a productive business, there is no bartering. Think about it... when you go to the mall...you either pay the price that is marked or leave the item in the store. I constantly remind myself that I have a business.... not a hobby. LAEDA planted business work ethics. The EDTP taught me how to build a business plan that I can continue to grow as my company grows.

(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

The journey on the road to business start-up was made easy with LAEDA. A blueprint was given for us to follow and make it our own. The challenges involved thinking like a businesswomen and the paperwork that comes with having a successful business. Through the years, I have given away my talents so it was a mindset change. The roleplaying and projects that we experienced added to my confidence of being successful!

(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?

Sew Perfect by Vanessa, LLC is online as well as a home business. My revenue has increased along with my customers.

(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future- (or existing) entrepreneurs?

My advice for future or existing entrepreneurs is to put in the work, attend the sessions, and most importantly ask for help. The finished product will be AMAZING!
