Felix Agbessi is the owner and operator of My Accounting Partner, LLC, which exists to specialize in taxation and represent taxpayers before the IRS. He is also a graduate of LAEDA’s Entrepreneurial Development Training Program. We had a chance to sit down with Mr. Agbessi to ask about his experience with entrepreneurship and LAEDA's training program.

(1) LAEDA: Entrepreneurship is a very challenging path to take with many different possible directions. What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

At a point in my career, I realized that I did not want to be pushed around by employers or supervisors without giving myself any chances to decide what was good for me.

(2) LAEDA: Why did you choose your industry?

I chose the accounting and taxation industry because it is what I do best. I have the education, skills and experience in that field. I studied accounting and business from high school all the way throughout college.

I specialized in taxation and became an Enrolled Agent (EA). EAs are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in taxation and also have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

Today, I have more than 25 years of accounting experience.

(3) LAEDA: Tell me about your experience while attending EDTP. What have the major takeaways been from the program? Have you had any “Ah-ha!” moments? How did the program help you?

EDTP is a good program. Even though I had a Masters degree in Business Administration before attending the program, it helped me refresh my memory and resolve practical questions on real business topics for my business.

(4) LAEDA: Tell me about your journey on the road to business start-up. What have been some of the challenges, successes, failures, etc.?

The road to business start-up was hard work. I was dedicated to it full-time. I had progress even though the growth was slow. I was not making enough money in the business to fulfill all my familial obligations so I, sometimes, have to take on temporary accounting consulting roles.

(5) LAEDA: Could you tell me a little about where your business is today?

I am still proud of myself today. I like what I do, which is helping individuals and small business owners who are frustrated with spending most of their time trying to handle paperwork related to personal finances instead of focusing on what they do best, their business operations.

(6) LAEDA: Do you have any advice for future (or existing) entrepreneurs?

My advice would be to have perseverance and dedication.
